Bring on the Sweat!

Solutions to keeping your style after the gym - Hair Studio Contributor

So you just got your hair done:  New color...  Touch-up...  Perm...  Relaxer...  Roller-set...  Complimeting whispers...  "I do need to get to the gym, but my hair looks so good."  Sounds familiar?  Well don't fret, for I have some great tips to share with you so you don't skip a beat with your workout regime while maintaining your incredible style!  Whether you go natural, relaxed, permed, or however, read these tips that will help you keep and manage your style until your next visit to the salon.

For chemically relaxed hair:

If you don't tend to sweat at your root, simply wrap your hair with a silk scarf and/or use a satin wrap cap.

If you visit a salon bi-weekly, wash your hair once with a shampoo and conditioner to remove the salt build-up that sweat can leave behind which can cause scalp and hair dryness.  Salt build-up can create the illusion of your hair needing a touch-up sooner than necessary.  (Please note:  You can wash your hair twice, if necessary, but only with a "conditioner" wash.  Shampoo is not to be used).  After your hair is dry, use steam rollers along with Argan Oil, instead of flat irons and curling irons, to reduce dryness and breakage.  Argan oil is a great daily moisturizer and is good to use after working out to reduce frizz and rejuvenate the hair and scalp.

For short haircuts, I recommend using a satin mesh wrap for the perimeter of your hair, keeping the top open.  This is a style keeper!

For natural hair:

Embrace those natural curls!  Wash and go styles are great!  Try these simple tips after the gym:

Before working out, wet your hair and apply a styling agent, then add cornrows.  After your workout, take the braids out and style.  After a hair wash, roll your locks on flexing rods and remove when dry.  Of course you can also go the cornrow route...  For moisture and shine, use 100% shea butter (creamy works the best!).

For highlighted and permanently colored hair:

I recommend making weekly appointments with a trusted stylist for shampooing, conditioning, and styling.  Unfortunately, maintaining your own hair with such treatments mixed with the salt that can occur from sweat, may cause breakage.  Your daily use of Argan Oil is recommended here as well.

For all hair types:

1.  Argan Oil, again, is a great daily moisturizer and good to use after working out to reduce frizz and rejuvenate the hair and scalp.

2.  If shampooing your hair, it is good to use a sulfate-free shampoo.  Please note, you can also use a "dry" shampoo but remember to shake well and read all of the directions thoroughly.

3.  Before working out use a small amount of edge tamer and then wrap hair with a silk or satin meash wrap or scarf.

Here is a list of my favorite products to make going to the gym and keeping your hair looking good:

1.      Save Your Do Wrap by Nicole Ari Parker @ saveyourdo.com

2.      Firstline Dri Sweat women's active wear headbands at Walgreens and Walmart

3.      Mizani purifying shampoo

4.      Keracare wax stick and edge tamer

5.      Keracare Sulfate-Free hydrating shampoo and humecto conditioner

7.      Agadir Argan Oil

8.      Aveeno Pure Renewal dry shampoo

9.      Renee Furterer Naturia dry shampoo

10.    Tresemme Freshstart dry shampoo

That's What I'm Here For...

Mani/Pedi Studio Contributor

"Boy, I really need my nails done...  I'll go when they look a bit better."

"My nails are too short..."

"I would love to get a pedicure but my feet look a mess..."

These thoughts are in the minds of more people than you know.  I've heard many reasons, throughout my years in the industry, as to why people do not visit a certified manicurist/pedicurist for their nail needs, even though they want to.  Now I think that's sad.  I'm here for you and believe me, I have seen it all.  GUESS WHAT, none of it bothers me.  Keep in mind that it's not all about the nails...  Your cuticles, your skin, your nutrition, and much more play such a huge role in the look and feel of your nails, hands, and feet.  Want your nails to look better?  Would you like to see healthy nail growth?  Want great looking feet?  Then what are you waiting for?  I'm here for you...
